Obituary for Rabbi Sherman SteinRabbi Sherman Stein age 86 passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 in Leesburg, Florida. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to The Villages in 2009 from Dallas, Texas. He obtained his master’s degree from Hebrew Union College and served many congregations around the country as Rabbi for over 52 years, and was Rabbi Emeritus at Congregation Shaareth Israel in Lubbock, Texas. Rabbi Stein also served as a Captain and Chaplain in the U. S. Air Force. He was a member of the Congregation Beth Shalom in Leesburg, Florida and Temple Shalom in Oxford, Florida. He was an avid model railroad enthusiast and relished the time he devoted to biblical studies. He was a mentor to many and enjoyed leading adult biblical study groups and spending time with close friends. He was the first Reform rabbi to establish regular, long-distance direct classroom participation in religious school settings. Established an annual Jewish Scholar-in-Residence Institute to enable Christian Clergy to learn from Jewish scholars.
He is survived by his children: Jonathan (Carolyn) Stein; Murry (Lauren) Stein; Jory Stein; Jessica Jackson; Lynn (Tony) DePaul; grandchildren: Matthew; Gregory; Jennica, and Miriam; brother: Martin (Judy) Stein; Wife: Natalie Kurtin.
