Bob Rutledge
I got the sad news from my brother Tony a few days ago. I hadn't seen Dave in almost 50 years, but still have great memories from the old days.
Dave moved to 22 Pascack, back-to-back with our house on Glendale Road, when we were in junior high, and we were good friends from then through college. He was smart, independent, self-assured, competitive, and, most importantly, had a great sense of humor. We played horse shoes in our back yard, marbles in his barn on a rainy day (he cleaned me out!), poker at Greenwood CC when we couldn't get a loop (caddying job), and pool at a private club in Zamora. This last was during our stint as "Lay Apostles" in Pueblo de Atecucario, near Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico, in the summer of 1962.
I was also sad to learn that Dave's son Conrad had passed on a year earlier. I found his memorial page on the web and discovered that he was a uniquely talented artist, and, judging from the "Picasso and Conrad Mecheski in Barcelona" picture, that he looked just like Dave, except for the curly hair!
My sincere condolences to Eveleen and the family. Even at a distance of 50 years, I can feel the magnitude of your loss.
